Peoplehood’s People: Kevin Howieson

Kevin  As our name suggests, Peoplehood is all about people – bringing local communities together to achieve healthier and happier neighbourhoods.

Without any doubt, Kevin Howieson is one of our most active members, he’s a phenomenal leader of our cycling programme and also one of our wonderful digital buddies. Kevin consistently goes the extra mile to make a positive difference and his contribution as a volunteer is valued – he’s a bona fide Peoplehood star!

So we thought we’d catch up with him and find out a bit more about why he volunteers, what he gets out of it and his thoughts on our Peoplehood programme.

How did you hear about Peoplehood volunteering programme?

I was a Peoplehood member and came along to a few of the events you were running and heard about opportunities to volunteer, but it wasn’t until I was talking to Viv (Sustaining Physical Activity Lead at Peoplehood) about my love for cycling when she mentioned the Cycle Leader Volunteer position. I really enjoy cycling; I have a lot of skills and experience I can pass on to others.

You are an active Cycle Leader Volunteer with us, but there are other things you do as well?

I’m also a Digital Buddy Volunteer with Peoplehood. I was volunteering with another organisation helping people with their Digital Skills before and wanted to continue to do it. I really enjoy volunteering and helping others.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Peoplehood?

Volunteering is very rewarding. Getting involved with Peoplehood has helped me personally. I’ve met new people, developed my skills and confidence. What’s been really nice is meeting some of the people I help at Peoplehood outside our sessions. The other day I ran into one of the people who’s been coming to the cycling sessions I lead. He was very proud to introduce me to his family as his Bike Instructor and it feels nice having these connections and experiences. Little things like that make it even more rewarding.

Why do you volunteer?

I don’t volunteer to get anything out of it. I just enjoy volunteering and helping others. I’ve been volunteering most of my adult life and enjoy being part of the Peoplehood Volunteer team.

What would you say to other people considering volunteering?

Come along to any of Peoplehood events and speak to the team. There will be lots of opportunities to volunteer with Peoplehood and they will find the right role for you. I’ve really enjoyed it and I would say – definitely give it a go and see if it is for you!
