Mental Health Awareness Week 2023: Anxiety

Mental Health Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. This year Mental Health week is held from Monday 15 to Friday 21 May with the focus on anxiety.

By increasing awareness and understanding of mental health issues, Mental Health Week helps to promote a more compassionate and supportive society for individuals living with mental illness.

In the UK, over eight million people are experiencing an anxiety disorder at any one time. Peoplehood members were indicating higher than average levels of anxiety when joining the project, but within six months their anxiety levels have decreased, after taking part in our activities.

We encourage all of you to join us this week, learn more about Mental Health and join our online activities on Facebook:

Anxiety is a common mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is a feeling of unease, worry or fear that can be overwhelming and interfere with daily life. While it is a normal response to stress or danger, it becomes problematic when it is disproportionate or persistent.

Symptoms of anxiety can vary depending on the individual, but can include feelings of restlessness, irritability, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, sweating, trembling, and difficulty sleeping. Anxiety can also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, and muscle tension.

Anxiety can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, life experiences, and environmental factors. It can also be a symptom of other mental health conditions such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

While anxiety can be debilitating, there are many ways to manage and treat it. Here are some strategies that can help:

  1. Practice relaxation techniques: Deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation can all help to calm the mind and reduce physical symptoms of anxiety.
  2. Get regular exercise: Exercise is a natural way to reduce stress and anxiety. Even a short walk or yoga session can make a big difference.
  3. Challenge negative thoughts: Anxiety often leads to negative self-talk and catastrophic thinking. It can be helpful to challenge these thoughts and replace them with more realistic and positive ones.
  4. Seek professional help: If anxiety is interfering with your daily life, it may be time to seek professional help. A mental health professional can help you develop coping strategies and recommend treatments such as medication or therapy.
  5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and avoiding alcohol and drugs can all help to manage anxiety.

It is important to remember that anxiety is a treatable condition. With the right support and strategies, it is possible to manage anxiety and lead a fulfilling life. If you or someone you know is struggling with anxiety, don’t hesitate to seek help. For more information on Mental Health, please visit Mental Health Foundation's website.
